Dark

Dark is a project for schools on dark matter, born in 2020 from the collaboration of researchers from various INFN divisions, mainly involved in dark matter experiments.
Various educational activities and initiatives are planned with the aim of involving high school and first year university students in the mystery of dark matter.

Some activities, involving theoretical lessons and practical ones carried out by the students, are organised in schools and the researchers go directly to the schools to meet the students; others are carried out remotely and involve several schools at the same time, in some cases, even at an international level. In 2021, for example, the project took part in the educational week organised by CERN in Geneva and organised a masterclass on dark matter for an Italian class together with a Belgian class.

For the Dark Matter Day, which is held every year on 31 October, many parallel activities are planned at the various INFN sites involved, offering educational initiatives in collaboration with the Fermi Centre. In 2020, the masterclass organised for this occasion was attended by around 450 students from 39 schools in Abruzzo, Campania, Emilia Romagna, Lazio, Marche, Sardinia, and Tuscany.
